Katie Thompson has been carving her pathway within the country music scene in New Zealand, although her sound transcends the singer-songwriter “format”, bleeding into genres as diverse as rock, pop, folk and more.

This talented artist has released two albums and a live EP, has toured New Zealand extensively, was selected to open for Sir Elton John at his New Zealand show November 2011 & was a finalist for Female Artist of the Year at the 2012 NZCMA’s.

Through her direct blend of story-telling and incredibly powerful hooks, Katie Thompson’s latest single Leave Your Hat On is a country-rock anthem with attitude!

Highlights/Accolades
  • Opening act for Sir Elton John at his only New Zealand concert in 2011.
  • Female Artist of the Year Finalist at the New Zealand CMA's
  • Raised $50,000 on Sellaband for 2nd album

Christchurch based singer/songwriter Katie Thompson’s star is most definitely on the rise. This talented artist has released two albums, was selected to open for Sir Elton John at his only NZ show November 2011 and was a finalist for Female Artist of the Year at the 2012 New Zealand Country Music Awards.

Katie’s debut album, Tall Poppy was released in 2009 and the record caught the attention of the international funding website Sellaband, where fans can buy in to the career of their favourite artists, with the aim of helping them hit the US$50,000 needed to record and release an album.

Katie was one of the fastest-ever artists to achieve the funding and the resulting album Impossible blends elements of folk, pop and country into a collection of bittersweet and beautiful songs. It was released to critical acclaim from even the most hardened music press, who have described her sound as "entrancing."

Impossible was recorded at Modern World Studios in the UK with award-winning producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Junica (feat. Ladyhawke), Melanie C) engineer Clint Murphy and a team of British and Kiwi musicians on board. ‘Impossible’ gained exposure with 3 singles ‘Good As Gold, Impossible & Cruel to be Kind’ making it onto NZ On Airs Kiwi Hit Discs & 2 of the singles received nationwide airplay on Classic Hits as part of their ‘As Kiwi As’ initiative.

Most recently Katie has released her live EP ‘Moving On’ recorded at Quicksand Studios. This live album is far removed from the polished tracks that can be heard on previous albums but you'll find this is a truer representation of what she brings to her live shows. It’s been described as fantastically raw but also wonderfully soft.
